“A Poem Is”: a collaborative poem by Writers’ Circle students

A Poem Is
(after A Poem for the Girl by the Lake by Irene Latham)

A poem comes from where I can’t go.
A poem goes where I can’t see.
A poem isn’t shy.

A poem takes me somewhere new.
A poem reflects realities.
A poem has a life.

A poem lurks in the crowd.
A poem is what you want to show but can’t.
A poem reflects the surrounding world.

A poem daydreams in sunflower fields.
A poem lightens the hearts of those who read it.
A poem flies and lifts anything that will listen.

A poem gives an inanimate object a voice.
A poem is every emotion.
A poem whispers like a breath in the night.

A poem is a personality.
A poem struggles against depression.
A poem is unnamed feelings named.

A poem does not hide.
A poem does not cower.
A poem searches for the stars hidden in the blanket that coats the sky.

A poem reflects power.
A poem goes left even when the crowd goes right.
A poem gets pushed on a swing.

A poem climbs the tallest tree.
A poem lingers in the mind.
A poem isn’t shy.

April was National Poetry Month! In Writers’ Circle we read selected poems together and considered ways that word choices and poetic elements like alliteration, repetition, and figurative language work together to create fresh, interesting writing- in poetry or prose.

This impromptu collaboration was created during a webinar in response to a poem we read and discussed. Writers could then use parts of this draft to continue their own version.
