Selected writing by WriteNOW poets!

In WriteNOW webinars, students follow their imaginations in all directions, creating poems as well as stories during our short writing sprints. Some poems are free verse, others experiment with forms, and each piece is wonderfully different! It’s exciting to see the diversity of ideas writers come up with in these quick, spontaneous pieces.

Whistle…
The wind swoops down,
Through the trees rustling leaves,
O’er tall mountains, through low valleys,
Goes wind.

-Elizabeth

Whisper.
Creak! Crackle! Snap!
A hike in the autumn.
On Halloween night, in the forest.
Midnight.

-Alessandra C.

Night in the Forest

Darkness creeps up into sky with Moon,
Silent bat on attack flies by,
Fungus glows with fireflies,
Mountain lion slinks off,
Night in the forest,
Coyote howls,
Humans prowl,
Forest,
Night

-Alessandra C.

Morning (A Nonet)

Plants and trees reach their branches toward the sky
Birds chirping and animals scuttling
The soft sound of leaves falling
The occasional footsteps
The bark of a dog
Meow of a cat
Vroom of a
car

-Sasha R.

Fire is a warm and crackling word
Warming you up on a cold,
Winter night
Or burning down forests
Fire can go on forever
Crackling and sizzling
Roasting marshmallows
Having a good day
Fire
Is a warm word

-Sasha R.

Night
Night is a magical word,
Associated with the scary dark,
Skeletons, ghouls, pumpkins, and spiders,
But truly is as cheerful as a lark.

Galaxies stretch across this black sea around us,
Pin pricks in the sky called stars are like fairy lights we praise,
But the moon, the not star “star” of the show,
Lights up the night with her mystical rays.

-Elizabeth G.

Light

Light is a selfless word, as it always shines for you

Light is a remembered word, as you will never forget it too

Light is a resilient word, as it stays for as long as it can

Light is a supportive word, as for you it is always your fan

Light gives you hope, something to reach for

Light is something that is always there, unlike folk lore

Light

-Shrey G.

When life gets tough and things go wrong
Resilience helps us stay strong.
Like a tree that bends but doesn’t break,
We’ll find the courage we need to take.
Resilience is our shining light,
It helps us face the darkest night.
