CHAPTER ONE
I walked into the library. The librarian was ecstatic to see me. I don’t come very often. I had only come today because I knew that there was a particular book at this library I needed.
“Hello Emerson! I never see you here! How can I help you?” asked Emily the librarian.
“Thank you, but I’m fine on my own.” I moved on. I saw the librarian’s cat. It looked up at me and hissed darkly.
I pretended to check the stacks, moving to the back of the library as I did. The cat stalked me. I shooed it away, but the cat ran, chasing me to the back.
There it was! The star wall. There was a projector, but it was a fake. I couldn’t name any of the stars on the wall partly because I didn’t care much for astronomy, but also those star patterns were similar to those of real stars, but there were no stars exactly like those. I had been having wonderful daydreams (and night dreams) about coming to this place. I looked to see if anyone was watching.
It was Halloween, the only time I could get through. This library was the only library I knew that was open on holidays. Not that I knew any other libraries, of course. I hate reading! But here I was, looking for a book. All I had to do then was get through without letting the cat in or letting the librarian find out.
