Celebrating writing from Spring 24 Poetry Party!

As students discovered, part of “poetry” is “try”! We experimented with many styles and forms of poetry, from haiku to limericks and more. Students shared some wonderful and inspired work in webinars and in our classroom!

Poems about poetry!

Poems can jump and fly.
Not unlike a butterfly.
A poem can think.
All it takes is to personify.
A poem can share emotion.
You just have to give it motion.
-Ethan

Today I am going to collect a poem.
In all of the calming flowers.
In crazy animals who look at me.
In a place that has nothing but sky.
In a rock full of words.
In the crackling fire of peace.
In a big pack of leaves.
In a new world of coolness.
In a ferocious me.
Today I am going to collect a poem.

Advice from a Cloud

Begin. Progress slowly.
Let sun shine come through.
Stand in front of any blue sadness.
Strike down in a flash for what matters most.
Don’t have lots of worries, be light.
Stretch out and show yourself.
Look up to big dreams.
Be you in any form.

A Kite’s Advice

Hey you, down there!
Don’t look down, but up!
Things won’t look so sad
if only you change your perspective.
-Yaqub

Some poetic definitions

Kindness creates joy.
Kindness brings love.
Kindness makes people laugh.
Kindness hugs people.
Kindness guides people.
Kindness attracts smiles.
-Yaqub

Fun is inside of you.
Fun talks to you.
Fun never lies.
Fun never gives up.

Fun makes you hungry for more.
Fun laughs deep down.
Fun makes time stop.
Fun is everywhere to me.
-Mila

Long and pointy,
Sometimes sharp.
Could poke a hole through a thin tarp.
Graphite center,
Wooden shell.
That’s my recipe for a writing spell.
-Ethan

Peace calls out to you.
Peace sneaks through the darkness.
Peace tunes out everything.
Peace dances in the wind.
Peace runs like never before.
Peace never cries.
Peace only comes when it’s quiet.
Peace giggles in your belly.
Peace doesn’t tell you why it does what it does.
-Mila

And some haiku!

Blue sky
Clouds float past
Glide
-Ethan

Blue raindrop
Falling from the clouds
To form a puddle
-Ethan

Blue as water
but up high
the wavy sky
-Yaqub

An ancient pond...
A frog leaps from the silence,
Kerplunk!
-Yaqub (after poem by Basho)

The haunted pond
With a frog that jumps in
It comes with a splash and a splish
-Mila (after poem by Basho)

Path through the forest
Colorful leaves fall down from trees
Autumn
-Ethan

Winter
A snowflake falls
You have cocoa and gingerbread
With a mysterious setting
-Mila

Pumpkin are growing...
Trees are golden,
Squirrels are eating.
-Yaqub

Daisy
White as the moon at night
Swaying in the wind
